ServiceNow Implementation Best Practices for First-Time Adopters

What to decide before configuration starts, and the early choices that are hard to undo later.

A first ServiceNow implementation is a rare chance to build things properly from the start. The decisions made in the first few weeks — data model, group structure, naming conventions, what gets customised and what stays out of the box — shape how easy the platform is to maintain for years.

Start with process, not configuration. Document how incidents, requests and changes actually flow today, including the informal workarounds. Then decide what the platform should reinforce and what it should replace. Configuration comes after those choices are made.

Keep customisation deliberate. Every custom field, script and table adds upgrade risk. If a requirement can be met with standard functionality and a small process change, that is usually the better long-term decision.

Plan for the people who will run the instance after go-live. Admin documentation, a clear enhancement process and a realistic support model matter as much as the initial build.
